None of us like the thought of having our vehicles stolen but for many worse than this is having their home broken into. Yet in some cases these two acts can go hand in hand as it was recently discovered in Toronto with the the take down of a very large and sophisticated group of car thieves.
It is common to think that a car being stolen is just a random act of some unscrupulous individual, or on occasion a few youngsters who want to go for a joy ride. It has not been unheard of in the past for well organized thieves to set up an action plan to steal vehicles on a regular basis so they can be disposed of out of the country for a good price.
In the news recently a joint formation of several Police services were successful at breaking up a successful group who were doing just that. This group of crooks would target high end neighborhoods looking for the best in vehicles that were going to be moved out of the country. While this is most disturbing and frustrating for those living in this high end neighborhoods, what was even more perturbing was the claim that some of these car criminals would actually break into the homes in search of the car keys.
Many of us have the habit when we enter our homes, to put our vehicle keys on a table near the front door, or perhaps leave them in our purse, or pocket jacket. These most likely would be the first areas the break in thief would check. We never would think that once the keys are safely in our homes that they would become the target of a car thief.
Of course anyone that is going to steal a car and be brazen enough to break into our homes to get the keys are not going to let their thievery stop there. While in the home it is a golden opportunity for them to quickly grab anything else that may look like it will bring them a few dollars.
Our defence against acts like this, is to make sure that we utilize all of our security measures. This includes locking and securing our vehicles, locking the doors and windows on our homes, and activating the alarm. We can also go a step further by having a driveway alert alarm installed.
In the house put the keys away in a inconspicuous place, as well as personal items like purses and wallets. The harder you make it for a would be criminal to find what they are looking for the more likely they are too give up, or if not then get caught.
