When it comes to fire safety and our Toronto homes most of us have a basic idea of how we would escape should a fire break out. The problem is when such a disaster as this strikes many tend to panic, and as a result they forget about any previous plans they may have mentally formed concerning a good fire escape route for their Toronto residence.
The sooner you know that a fire has broke out the better chances for your escape. This is why having the right fire alarms installed in your home is so important. They are of no use to you if they are not in prime working condition. Also be sure that you have fire/smoke alarms installed on every floor of the house.
Everyone within the home has to be aware of your fire escape plan and know it well. As a family plan your get out route together. This way everyone is involved in such a crucial life saver and make sure that each and every person memorizes the plan. Do some mock evacuations, and even plan to do one in the nighttime hours when it is dark. You may want to tell the family that you are planning a fire drill but not the exact time. If you run too many fire drills as a surprise others may think that its a mock drill you are running at some point in time when it is a real fire. Just like the boy who cried wolf too many times.
If one of the exits is going to be a window, make sure that the door to the room is closed before opening the window, as a draft from the window could fan the fire and this could possibly close off the exit route.
Plan your exit well giving you a couple of options. You want to choose exits that are going to be closest to where people could be in the home if a fire broke out. For example, if it were nighttime and everyone was in bed, where would the closest exit to the outdoors from the bedrooms be. The same if you spend time in the basement. Advise everyone to keep their mouth and nose covered as they are making their exit. Smoke and deadly fumes rise.
Set up a meeting place for everyone to go to once they have escaped the home. Someplace that is a short distance away from the home.
Keep all potential fire exits clear from blockage such as furniture and make sure they can be opened easily from the inside. For fire safety products be sure to check out what is available through the security experts at Pre-lock.
