Giving Extra Thoughts to Door Security

doorknob safetyMany of us are aware of the tragic event that led to the loss of a youngster’s life recently in Toronto. This was an unfortunate incident and the frightening aspect is it could happen to any of our little ones.

It is much easier to secure our doors and windows in a home compared to an apartment. Often there are rules in place for apartment dwellers as to the changing of locks or what kinds of locks they can use.

Then there is always the issue no matter where we live as to making our doors so safe and secure to keep unwanteds out, that it could be difficult for us to get out in the case of an emergency.

This is one of the reasons why it really is important to rely on security experts like those at Pre-lock who have the expertise to offer the right advice and security solutions.

Often we don’t give our kids enough credit as to what they learn and are capable of. Until we hear of an incident such as this latest tragedy with the little guy wandering outdoors in the bitter cold, we just assume when we tuck our kids into bed they are safe and sound.

We don’t assume that they may get up and decide to leave our premises. Or perhaps in some cases they sleep walk. This is not uncommon in children. As our toddlers grow we don’t realize that they are so observant and may watch how we lock and unlock our doors and soon are able to mimic us.

It isn’t just our exit doors that we need to be concerned about. Many homes have a security system in place that they activate at night, which would alert them if the door were opened even from the inside out. It is other doors like to the basement or the laundry or storage rooms that can hold hidden dangers.

There are a couple of inexpensive resources that can be utilized. Dead bolts can be installed on these doors that would make it more difficult for young ones to master. There are special door handle gadgets that can be placed over the handles, that even some adults have a hard time maneuvering.

What it comes down to is we pay so much attention to installing measures to keep out thieves and crooks that we forget to focus on our other security needs. There are a lot of other dangers that we potentially face for any age group in our homes that we can address with additional security measures.

Items like our fire and smoke safety. Flood alerts, and life alerts for seniors are just a few examples.

Unfortunately all too often it takes a tragedy and not necessarily one that directly affects us to get us thinking as hard as we should be about additional safety and security measures.
