If you happen to be the victim of a theft then you are no doubt dealing with a lot of emotions and hassles. If it is as a result of a home break in then chances are you are dealing with some repairs as the result of the crook who gained entry to your home. Perhaps you have a lot of unanswered questions and one of these may be what has happened to your stolen property?
Hopefully you had good insurance coverage so at least the monetary value of the items stolen will be replaced. This does nothing for the sentimental value that may be part of the stolen goods. No money in the world can buy that back.
There are plenty of places that thieves will use to get rid of the items they have lifted from your home. They don’t usually like to hang onto these for too long of a time. It increases their risk of getting caught. Most often its money they are after, and if they don’t find a large amount of this in your home then the next best thing is your valuables. Most times when they are selling these to someone its at a fraction of the price they are worth.
If its jewelery they may use outlets that buy gold and other types of jewelery for cash. They may have what are called “fences” lined up who know the items are stolen but have a market for them.
Some thieves or fences will actually sell the stolen goods online. They may try and do this through an auction site, Ebay, Craig’s list, or Kiiji, just to name a few.
There are a few steps that you can put into play to increase the odds of getting your stolen property back in the event you become a victim of theft.
1. Make sure that you inventory all of your items with detail. Do this even for the ones that may not have a monetary value or be covered by your insurance but have a sentimental value to you.
2. If possible put an engraved marking on them in an inconspicuous place, to use for tracking if the police locate them.
3. Take good detailed pictures of each item and date these then keep them in a safe place and not with the items. If the thief sees these then they will take them with them.
4. Be sure to give the Police as accurate a description of the items as well. Additional information that you may not have recorded will be just as important.
5. Even if you have had only a few things stolen and don’t believe they have that much monetary value, report it to the police anyway.
6. Most importantly be sure that you discuss your security needs with a top quality security company like Pre-lock. Theft prevention is the first step to not having to deal with the loss of your personal items.
