Throughout the Holiday season many families enjoy entertaining visitors from out of town. These friends and families often make plans to stay throughout the week of Christmas day to New Years day. This can create a bit of disruption in your standard security regime for your home.
Often visitors like to take advantage of their time here in Toronto, and as a result they are coming and going to your home. You may have other commitments and need to allow your visitors to access your home when you are not there. The problem is how do you set your security systems yet still accommodate your visitors?
One thing you do not want to do is disarm your security program so they don’t have to worry about it. Thieves count on this because they know that many families have guests that are staying and they may watch for an opportunity such as this. What you can do is give the security code access to your guests if you feel they are trustworthy. After they leave you can reset your security code to a new setting.
It is also important to show your guests the basics of your security measures so they do not false trigger the alarms in your absence. You also want them to know how to responds should a security alert be activated.
Of course you want your guests to feel safe and comfortable during their visit, but you should also encourage them to use the same security measures that they would use at home or anywhere else. Remind them to lock their vehicles when they are leaving them. Encourage them not to leave their valuables in the vehicle, or if they have to then put them out of sight.
It is also a good idea to show your visitors your fire route escape plan. Don’t forget they do not know the layout of your home as well as you do. If such a disaster should strike then they will be prepared to exit in the proper manner.
It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the Holiday season, but it is so important to stay on top of your security measures and to be even more alert during this time of the year.
