You take a quick look at your windows and they look pretty secure to you. The question is how secure are they from a break-in artist’s point of view. All too often we can build up a false sense of security regarding our homes.
We are fairly good at recognizing that our doors and windows are the most vulnerable areas to allow for an intrusion. You windows can simply be left unlocked by accident. Thieves will normally try to pry the windows open first, and failing that they will break the glass. There are some who have sliding windows and these have to be protected in such a way that a criminal cannot just slide them off their tracks to gain entry.
Older homes tend to be in need of window repairs. It may be that the glass itself looks fine, but the putty holding the glass in place is old and a lot of it could be missing. What is left can be easily chipped away by a crook so he can simply lift the pane of glass out.
You want to begin by assessing the vulnerability of each of the windows in your home. At first glass you may be figuring they are pretty tough to get into and you can vouch for their accessibility because they are tough to get at when you go to clean them. Could a daring thief be more brave and therefore success at reaching your windows? Can any of them be reached from an out building or the attached garage? Is there a TV antenna or trellis that would prove to be a useful tool in reaching the window. Or how about that shade tree with the sturdy branch that almost touches your window?
What is the quality of the glass like itself? It may look clear, but does it have any protective glazing on it to prevent it from being shattered easily with minimum noise? Check to make sure that the sash and frame of each window is not rotting. Although the windows may have locks on them, make sure they are strong and create a good hold.
This gets you started on thinking about your windows in general. Later on we will talk about the different types of windows and the individual security challenges that each of them can present.
