Can you imagine arriving home only to discover that you have been robbed! There is one thing for sure and that is you are going to feel a lot of different emotions. The first one might be fear that the intruders are still inside and it could be a possibility. There are several steps that you need to take for an event such as this.
The first thing you need to do is either call the Police from your cell phone or go to a neighbor’s and use theirs. It may be hard for you to stay calm, but you will need to do so because you will have to give the police as much information as possible, so they can attend.
Once the police arrive they will check out your home thoroughly to make sure that nobody is still inside. You will have to make an inventory of what is missing and this can be difficult because you are still dealing with a lot of emotions.
You may be asked not to touch anything until they have done their initial investigation, and they may want to dust for fingerprints. Once they give you the go ahead then you can start to determine what is missing.
Ideally you should have compiled a asset list of all your home belongings. This way you can use it as a check sheet to determine what is gone. The obvious items won’t be hard to determine, but it is the small items you may overlook.
While the police are going to be asking you a lot of questions, you also need to ask them for some information. You need to get their names, and the occurence number and ask them to send you a copy of the police report when it is compiled.
One important item to check to see if stolen is any credit cards, or bank cards or other documents with personal information on them. If the cards have been stolen you need to notify the institutions pertaining to them as quickly as possible.
The next thing you need to do is start taking photographs of any damage that was done as a result of the breakin. At the very least there may be damage in the area of the entry point.
If you have damaged items be sure to hand onto them until the Insurance company gives you permission to discard them.
You may not have the opportunity to secure this entry so you can call in professionals like Pre-lock that will come and temporarily secure this area for you.
If you happen to have photographs of your valuables be sure to make a copy of these and give them to the police. They can be useful in helping them to identify and retrieve some of your stolen property.
Finally when everything has settled down, you want to do a review of the security measures on your home. Again you may want to ask the experts at Pre-lock to help you with this as security is their business.
