Re: Toronto Fire Alarm Verification Policy

Effective September 1, 2010 I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we have amended our Fire Alarm dispatch procedure for clients in the Metropolitan Toronto area who have monitored smoke detectors and heat detectors as part of there schedule of protection with us.  The City of Toronto now charges $410.00 for each emergency vehicle it sends to a premises with false Fire Alarm.  typically the city dispatches three trucks to each location, which can lead to a $1400.00 fee for a false fire alarm that would be the responsibility of the customer to pay.

In order to avoid our clients from incurring this charge, our policy for handling fire alarms has slightly changed.  Effective immediately, we will attempt to suppress fire alarms singnals from being transmitted for 60 seconds on activation allowing a user to quickly disarm a system to send an authorized cancel code authentication by entering a valid arm disarm code on the keypad which would cancel the alarm before it is transmitted.  If upon disarming you do discover a fire you will need to leave your premise immediately and contact the Fire Department from outside the premise and not reenter the home.    In the event we don't receive a cancel code we will then attempt to contact the premise and reach your up to date key holder list that we have on file.  We will follow this new procedure unless alternative arrangements have been made in writing,   It is your responsiblity to insure that we have a complete list of people to call with all the correct numbers.

Pre-Lock Security will only dispatch the fire department following an attempt to verify the signal we received on all fire alarm activations.   When our monitoring station receives a fire alarm signal from a Metropolitan Toronto premises, our alarm monitoring station will call the emergency contact numbers first to attempt to verify that there is an emergency situation taking place or accept instructions from the key holder not to send the Fire Department.   As soon as the monitoring station determines that there is in fact a fire, the appropriate authorities will be contacted immediately and fire services will be dispatched.

Our change in policy will reduce the number of false alarms reported to the fire department and will allow clients to avoid incurring this exorbitant new fee under the City of Toronto new Law which are currently the responsibility of the home and business owner. 

Due to this change, it is important that you ensure your emergency contact list is 100%  up-to-date and accurate.   We would also suggest adding your neighbors to the call list as local friends and family would provide the best look out for your safety and minimize expensive false alarms.
